By Sufi Mystic Mawlana Jalal al-din Muḥammad Balkhi (Rumi)
Translated by Yazdan Raees & Erin Airout Show me your face because seeing a flower garden is my desire Open your lips because lots of sugar is my desire The sun of goodness, come out of the clouds Because that illuminated, shinning face is my desire I heard from the air the sound of drums I came back because meeting the king is my desire You told me don’t bother me with your cuteness, go away The way you told me that I should not bother you is my desire And like that time that you told me go away, the king is not home That manner and contention of the gatekeeper is my desire In whosoever hands it resides, it remains without value in goodness The jewel and the mine of sweetness is my desire The bread and water of this mundane wheel, like a flood, is unfaithful I am the fish I am the whale, the sea of Oman is my desire Like Yaghob (Jacob), I am shouting “Vaa Asfehaa!” out of grief Seeing my son, Yousef of Kanaan is my desire I swear to god that without you this city becomes my prison Leaving everything behind, wandering in the mountains and the desert is my desire From these weak-rooted companions my heart is broken The lion of the god and “Rostam e Dastaan” is my desire My soul became tired of Pharoah and his cruelty The light of the face of Moses son of Emran is my desire From these complaining crying people I am tired That “hawy and hui” and the shouting of the drunks is my desire I have more to say that a nightingale but because of the jealousy of the public There is a seal on my mouth and shouting is my desire Last night the master with the light was roaming around the town Saying “I am tiered of demons and angels, human is my desire They said “You cannot find, we have already searched everywhere The one that cannot be found is the one I desire Although I am poor I don’t accept any agate because that rare invaluable agate is my desire hidden from the eyes but everything that can be seen comes from it that visible art of the hidden one is my desire my destiny has overcome each and every desire and craving from material, from space, towards the pillar is my desire my ears heard the story of devotion and became drunk the kind of eyes that can see the face of fate and devotion is my desire in one hand, a cup of wine, in the other the hair of the beloved dancing like this in the center of circle is my desire I am the lover of love and my love is for the lover Those blessings, the scars of the merciful is my desire The rest of this poem the subtle player Imagine it like this because like this is my desire Show your face Shams, the pride of Tabriz from the East I am the bird Hod Hod, presence of Solomon is my desire دیوان شمس تبریزی بنمای رخ که باغ و گلستانم آرزوست بگشای لب که قند فراوانم آرزوست ای آفتاب حسن برون آ دمی ز ابر کان چهره مشعشع تابانم آرزوست بشنیدم از هوای تو آواز طبل باز باز آمدم که ساعد سلطانم آرزوست گفتی ز ناز بیش مرنجان مرا برو آن گفتنت که بیش مرنجانم آرزوست وان دفع گفتنت که برو شه به خانه نیست وان ناز و باز و تندی دربانم آرزوست در دست هر کی هست ز خوبی قراضههاست آن معدن ملاحت و آن کانم آرزوست این نان و آب چرخ چو سیلست بیوفا من ماهیم نهنگم عمانم آرزوست یعقوب وار وااسفاها همیزنم دیدار خوب یوسف کنعانم آرزوست والله که شهر بیتو مرا حبس میشود آوارگی و کوه و بیابانم آرزوست زین همرهان سست عناصر دلم گرفت شیر خدا و رستم دستانم آرزوست جانم ملول گشت ز فرعون و ظلم او آن نور روی موسی عمرانم آرزوست زین خلق پرشکایت گریان شدم ملول آنهای هوی و نعره مستانم آرزوست گویاترم ز بلبل اما ز رشک عام مهرست بر دهانم و افغانم آرزوست دی شیخ با چراغ همیگشت گرد شهر کز دیو و دد ملولم و انسانم آرزوست گفتند یافت مینشود جستهایم ما گفت آن که یافت مینشود آنم آرزوست هر چند مفلسم نپذیرم عقیق خرد کان عقیق نادر ارزانم آرزوست پنهان ز دیدهها و همه دیدهها از اوست آن آشکار صنعت پنهانم آرزوست خود کار من گذشت ز هر آرزو و آز از کان و از مکان پی ارکانم آرزوست گوشم شنید قصه ایمان و مست شد کو قسم چشم صورت ایمانم آرزوست یک دست جام باده و یک دست جعد یار رقصی چنین میانه میدانم آرزوست من هم رباب عشقم و عشقم ربابیست وان لطفهای زخمه رحمانم آرزوست باقی این غزل را ای مطرب ظریف زین سان همیشمار که زین سانم آرزوست بنمای شمس مفخر تبریز رو ز شرق من هدهدم حضور سلیمانم آرزوست مولانا جلالالدین محمد بلخی The valley spirit never dies;
Timeless woman, primal mother. Her gateway is the root of heaven and Earth. Like a veil barely seen. Apply her wisdom; it will never fail. -Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching Considering the forms of the heart-mind,
They are naturally infused and filled with it. They are naturally generated and completed by it. The reason why one loses it Is because of grief, happiness, joy, anger, desire, and profit-seeking. If you can cast off grief, happiness, joy, anger, desire and profit-seeking, Your heart-mind will return to equanimity. The disposition of such a heart-mind Is that it benefits from calmness to attain serenity. Do not disturb it; do not disrupt it. Then harmony will naturally become complete. When you really want to know who you are or what the real significance of human life, human suffering is, very naturally you come back to silence, even though you don't want to, you return to an area of no-sound. It cannot be explained, but in this silence you can realize, even if only dimly, what the real point is that you want to know. Whatever kind of question you ask or whatever you think, finally you have to return to silence. This silence is vast; you don't know what it is.
- Dainin Katagiri The nature of ignorance is to lack deep communication with nature or with the universe. It is to separate, to isolate, to create discrimination and differences, so that finally we cannot communicate as a harmonious whole. These differences we create appear as fighting, anger, hatred, and war.
- Dainin Katagiri Do not follow the ideas of others, but learn to listen to the voice within yourself. Your body and mind will become clear and you will realize the unity of all things.
- Dogen …The mind’s capacity is limitless, and its manifestations are inexhaustible. Seeing forms with your eyes, hearing sounds with your ears, smelling odours with your nose, tasting flavours with your tongue, every movement or state is all your mind. At every moment, where language can’t go, that’s your mind.
The sutras say, “A Tathagata’s forms are endless. And so is his awareness.” The endless variety of forms is due to the mind. Its ability to distinguish things, whatever their movement or state, is the mind’s awareness. But the mind has no form and its awareness no limit. Hence it’s said, “A Tathagata’s forms are endless. And so is his awareness.” A material body of the four elements is trouble. A material body is subject to birth and death. But the real body exists without existing; because a Tathagata’s real body never changes. The sutras say, “People should realize that the Buddha-nature is something that they have always had.” Kashyapa only realized his own nature. Our nature is the mind. And the mind is our nature. This nature is the same as the mind of all Buddhas. Buddhas of the past and future only transmit this mind. Beyond this mind there’s no Buddha anywhere. But deluded people don’t realize that their own mind is the Buddha. They keep searching outside. They never stop invoking Buddhas or worshiping Buddhas and wondering Where is the Buddha? Don’t indulge in such illusions. Just know your mind. Beyond your mind there’s no other Buddha. The sutras say, “Everything that has a form is an illusion.” They also say, “Wherever you are, there’s a Buddha.” Your mind is the Buddha. Don’t use a Buddha to worship a Buddha! Wherever you are, you are one with the clouds and one with the sun and the stars you see. You are one with everything. That is more true than I can say, and more true than you can hear.
- Shunryu Suzuki Zengetsu, a Chinese master of the T'ang dynasty, wrote the following advice for his pupils:
"Living in the world yet not forming attachments to the dust of the world is the way of a true Zen student. When witnessing the good action of another encourage yourself to follow his example. Hearing of the mistaken action of another, advise yourself not to emulate it. Even though alone in a dark room, be as if you were facing a noble guest. Express your feelings, but become no more expressive than your true nature. Poverty is your treasure. Never exchange it for an easy life. A person may appear a fool and yet not be one. He may only be guarding his wisdom carefully. Virtues are the fruit of self-discipline and do not drop from heaven of themselves as does rain or snow. Modesty is the foundation of all virtues. Let your neighbours discover you before you make yourself known to them. A noble heart never forces itself forward. Its words are as rare gems, seldom displayed and of great value. To a sincere student, every day is a fortunate day. Time passes but he never lags behind. Neither glory nor shame can move him. Censure yourself, never another. Do not discuss right and wrong. Some things, though right, were considered wrong for generations. Since the value of righteousness may be recognized after centuries, there is no need to crave immediate appreciation. Live with cause and leave results to the great law of the universe. Pass each day in peaceful contemplation." Word spread across the countryside about the wise Holy Man who lived in a small house atop the mountain. A man from the village decided to make the long and difficult journey to visit him.
When he arrived at the house, he saw an old servant inside who greeted him at the door. “I would like to see the wise Holy Man,” he said to the servant. The servant smiled and led him inside. As they walked through the house, the man from the village looked eagerly around the house, anticipating his encounter with the Holy Man. Before he knew it, he had been led to the back door and escorted outside. He stopped and turned to the servant, “But I want to see the Holy Man!” “You already have,” said the old man. “Everyone you may meet in life, even if they appear plain and insignificant… see each of them as a wise Holy Man. If you do this, then whatever problem you brought here today will be solved.” In spring, hundreds of flowers; in autumn,
a harvest moon; In summer, a refreshing breeze; in winter, snow will accompany you. If useless things do not hang in your mind, Any season is a good season for you. Ekai, called Mu-mon All sentient beings are essentially Buddhas.
As with water and ice, there is no ice without water; apart from sentient beings, there are no Buddhas. Not knowing how close the truth is, we seek it far away - what a pity! - Hakuin Ekaku Zenji The Tao doesn't take sides;
it gives birth to both good and evil. The Master doesn't take sides; she welcomes both saints and sinners. The Tao is like a bellows: it is empty yet infinitely capable. The more you use it, the more it produces; the more you talk of it, the less you understand. Hold on to the centre. ~ Lao Tzu "Tao Te Ching" People of this world are deluded. They're always longing for something - always, in a word, seeking. But the wise wake up. They choose reason over custom. They fix their minds on the sublime and let their bodies change with the seasons. All phenomena are empty. They contain nothing worth desiring. Calamity forever alternates with Prosperity. To dwell in the three realms is to dwell in a burning house. To have a body is to suffer. Does anyone with a body know peace? Those who understand this detach themselves from all that exists and stop imagining or seeking anything. The sutras say, "To seek is to suffer. To seek nothing is bliss." When you seek nothing, you're on the Path.
- Bodhidharma It makes no sense!
to get entangled again after so much time! In the air, the dangling end of a broken spider's thread. - Tonna Stop searching for phrases and chasing after words. Take the backward step and turn the light inward. Your body-mind of itself will drop away and your original face will appear. If you want to attain just this, immediately practice just this.
- Master Dogen From 'Recommending Zazen to all people' When I'm at peace I let everything go
I wake by the east window long after sunrise viewed without passion everything is fine seasonal glories hold true for man the Tao fills the world the formed the formless our thoughts are in the ever-changing wind and clouds not troubled by wealth content in poverty the person who reaches this is truly noble - Ch'eng Hao Because one believes in oneself, one does not try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one does not need other's approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.
- Lao Tzu Greed, anger, ignorance: drink deep
these poisoned wines and lie drunk and in darkness, unknowing... Make riches your dream: your dream's a cage of gold. Bitterness is cause of bitterness, give it up, or dwell within that dream. You better wake up soon, wake up and go home. - Shih Te The key… is to practice mindfulness. “When your body and mind are not one, you do not see deeply,” she says. “You are in front of your brother, but your mind is on many other things, so you don’t really see your brother. Maybe he is having some trouble, but you don’t see it, not even when you share the same room. But mindfulness brings you there, to the present, and then you see. Train yourself all day long to bring your mind to your body and to be present with your food, your friends, your work, everything, because the more you concentrate, the deeper you will see.”
- Chan Khong When people see some things as beautiful,
Other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, Other things become bad. Being and non-being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short define each other. High and Low depend on each other. Before and After follow each other. Therefore the Master acts without doing anything and teaches without saying anything. Things arise and she lets them come; things disappear and she lets them go. She has, but doesn't possess, acts but doesn't expect. When her work is done, she forgets it. That is why it lasts forever. ~ Tao Te Ching This body's lifetime is like a bubble
may as well let things go plans and events seldom agree who can step back doesn't worry we blossom and fade like flowers we gather and part like clouds earthly thoughts I forgot long ago withering away on a mountain peak - Stonehouse The past is already past.
Don't try to regain it. The present does not stay. Don't try to touch it. From moment to moment. The future has not come; Don't think about it Beforehand. Whatever comes to the eye, Leave it be. There are no commandments To be kept; There's no filth to be cleansed. With empty mind really Penetrated, the dharmas Have no life. When you can be like this, You've completed The ultimate attainment. - Layman P'ang The rain has stopped, the clouds have drifted away,
and the weather is clear again. If your heart is pure, then all things in your world are pure. Abandon this fleeting world, abandon yourself, Then the moon and the flowers will guide you along the Way. - Ryokan |
